The history of the music venue dates back to 1910 when owner Emma Gates Butler approached architects, Merritt Reid and James W. to design plans for a dance hall. Originally named The Majestic Hall, the venue was also an academy where diverse dance styles were taught and celebrated.
The hall’s inauguration took place in 1912 and over the years the facility has undergone several name changes. During the thirties, The Filmore first started being known as The Get Acquainted Hall after which its name was changed to Roller Rink and finally Ambassador Dance Hall. During this time the majority of artists who performed at the music hall were locals. It wasn’t until the fifties that the venue started inviting international artists after entrepreneur Charles Sullivan took charge of the hall’s management. A large majority of black artists were also seen performing at the vicinity. These include singers such as Tina Turner & Ike, the Bobby “Blue” Band and James Brown, to name a few.
With the onset of the fifties and the sixties, the hall started promoting Bohemian music and introduced veteran Bill Graham, who brought fame to the Filmore Hall. He took charge of organizing events that brought in audiences from all over America. Some of his most popular shows include the 1965 performance by R. G. Davis’s San Francisco Mime Troupe. The 1966 concert headlined by Jefferson Airplane was another famed event that brought in thousands.
As popularity made its way to the doors of the music hall, the venue foresaw another name change and started being known as The Elite Club. It wasn’t until an earthquake hit San Francisco that the theatre was shutdown in 1989 for renovations and reopened in 1994 as The Filmore. The center was named after the street it is located on i.e. the Filmore Street. The opening show that was held at the hall invited The Smashing Pumpkins along with the American Music Club to perform.
