Elgin Theatre
The Elgin Theatre, paired with the Winter Garden Theatre, are a couple of Edwardian stacked theatres of Toronto. Being located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Elgin Theatre along with the Winter Garden Theatre are the only Edwardian style stacked theatres left in the whole country of Canada.

The architectural design of the Elgin Theatre was given by Thomas W. Lamb. Lamb was a famous architect of that time who was also the mastermind behind the Canon Theatre.

The Elgin Theatre is now considered as a best tourist spot and a mesmerizing architectural masterpiece.

The Elgin Theatre in Yesteryears
The Elgin Theatre was established in the year 1989. Originally the theatre was built in the year 1931 to act as a centerpiece for the theatre chain of Marcus Lowe. The sacked theatre"s lower ornate part was Lowe"s Young Street Theatre.

This part is now known as the Elgin theatre. The Lowe"s Young Street Theatre played a home to Vaudeville productions. Vaudeville production had its great reputation throughout Canada and it attracted new and genuine talent towards its productions.

The upper part of the theatre was called Winter Gardner Theatre that was decorated into a forest. The Winter Gardner Theatre also hosted the Vaudeville Productions.

Both the theatres owed their existence to the Vaudeville Productions. Thus, in 1928 when the Vaudeville Productions faced a serious financial crisis, the Winter Gardner Theatre was closed.

The Winter Gardner Theatre stayed closed for next few decades. The Winter Gardner Theatre had a lot of theatrical asset in it including the props and sceneries. That asset was kept there untouched which is now considered as world"s largest collection of surviving props.

The lower part Lowe"s Young Street Theatre was converted into a cinema. In the year 1969, Marcus Lowe sold the Elgin Theatre to the Famous Players. The Famous Players made a really harsh use of the theatre building and used it as a cinema for showing X rate movies and pornography.

Restoration of the Elgin Theatre
The fate of the Elgin theatre finally came to a shinning end when the two theatres were bought by Ontario Heritage Foundation and started working on its renovation and refurbishing.

The Elgin Theatre building was closed for the general public in the year 1987 for its complete renovation and restoration activities. The restoration process took two years and the Elgin was reopened in 1989.

In the year 1991, a new LARES production system was installed in the Elgin Theatre by Dr. David Griesinger and Steve Barbar of Lexicon Inc. LARES is basically an electro-acoustic enhancement system that amplifies architectural acoustics.

Artists and Events at the Elgin Theatre
In February 2004, the prominent presenter Conan O'Brien recorded four episodes of his famous program, "Late Night with Conan O" Barien."

In the mid of 1990"s decade, Elgin Theatre played a home to the "Who"s Tommy" musical event. The most prominent event that happened in the walls of Elgin Theatre is the great Toronto International Film Festival. Each year celebrities from all around the world gather at the Elvin Theatre to take part in this festival.
