It is exactly located on the corners of Broadway and Madison at Grand Circus Park. The theater was originally opened January 12, 1922, as the Capitol Theater. At the time of its gala premiere, the 4,250-seat theater claimed to be the fifth largest in the world.

The Capitol Theater's name changed to the Paramount Theater in 1929, and again changed in 1934 to the Broadway Capitol Theater. After several years of near decay the theater underwent a minor restoration in the 1960 and this restoration again brought a new name to it. It became a movie house again by the name of Grand Circus which was later replaced by its current name Detroit Opera House.

The theater was the first in a series of splendid vaudeville and moving picture houses built in the Grand Circus Park area in the 1920s. It was designed by a very famous architect of Detroit C.

Howard Crane, responsible for the designs of other landmarks of Detroit such as Fox Theater, State Theater and Orchestra Hall. C. Howard Crane was selected for the purpose because of his brilliance for acoustically superb theater design and his grand European style of his other genius crafted buildings and opera houses around the nation.

With the seating capacity of 2,700 occupants Detroit Opera House is the home of Michigan Opera Theater. The names of great artists like Louis Armstrong the great jazz legend and Duke Ellington marked the ages of this opera house.

It has also presented artists like Will Rogers, Betty Hutton, Guy Lombardo, Gale Storm, Sal Mineo and many of the rock and roll stars of the 1950s to the crowd.

The decorum of former Capitol Theater is the reflection of Italian Renaissance style with lavish crystal chandeliers, frescoes, brass fixtures, marble stairways and drinking fountains.

Rich rose-red Italian damask was used for the main-stage curtain and draperies throughout the house. Most of these features are still the vibrant part of the Detroit Opera House today.

The Detroit Opera House has a separate state of the art structured Parking Center. It is situated few steps from the Detroit Opera House and close to Ford Field, Comerica Park, Music Hall, Foxtown, Greektown and Harmonie Park.
