Cox Arena
Positioned on the SDSU campus, in San Diego, CA, is a very popular multi-purpose venue, known as Cox Arena. In addition to hosting a wide variety of various events, the facility is home to SDSU Aztecs men's and women's basketball teams. It opened in the late 1990’s, primary to house basketball matches and concerts. Today, it houses a great variety of events, including commencement ceremonies, various sporting events, concerts, stage shows and more. The multi-use facility, called Cox Arena, broke ground on the 27th of March, 1995, in the notable San Diego State University Aztec Bowl site, which opened in 1936, to serve as the site for university cultural and sporting events. Then, by 1988, the Associated Students’ of SDSU endorsed the Student Activity Center referendum, allowing for a compulsory student fee increase for the funding of building the facility that would be called the Cox Arena and Aztec Recreation Center. In November of 1994, Aztec Bowl received title as a historic site and was selected as the site for the Cox Arena. Because of the historic designation of the bowl, the bleacher sections of the bowl were preserved and can still be seen even today.
In the July of 1997, Cox Arena opened to serve both the campus and the community. Before the Cox Arena was built, the Aztecs played at Peterson Gymnasium, which is also located in the SDSU campus. The arena was named Cox Arena for the Cox Communications (owner of the local cable television system in the greater San Diego region) as it had paid fees to become the corporate sponsor of the arena. However, more recently, the name of the arena changed and it is now known as Viejas Arena. Nevertheless, the San Diego State University still owns it, and the facility still continues to present quality entertainment with flawless sight lines and acoustics. Every seat in the house is excellent, and the facility plays host to concerts, athletic events, conferences, academic gatherings and lectures.
It is also the home of the Aztec Basketball. This 12,000 seat venue has been host to a diversity of exciting entertainment events. In addition to hosting a number of NCAA basketball and volleyball games, the Cox Arena has hosted famous artists and acts including Tim McGraw, Elton John, Beyonce, The Wiggles, and many more!
