The Michigan"s finest arena known as the Cobo Arena is named for Albert E. Cobo, mayor of Detroit from 1950 to 1957. So far, the arena has entertained national and international audiences for more than four decades and is known to harbor the greatest rock 'n' roll audiences in the world.
Not only is it a site for concerts, sporting and civic events, but Cobo Arena is also the site for family shows. The magnificent facility has been utilized by America"s most powerful political figures, Hollywood movie agents, music magnets, and television talk-show hosts for rallies, gatherings, location shoots and spectacular shows.
Cobo Arena, resides right beside the Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit, Michigan, on the shores of the Detroit River. It is attached to Cobo Hall, which is a convention center that hosts the famous Detroit Auto Show every January.
It is a 12,191-seat indoor arena adjacent to Cobo Hall. Designed by Gino Rossetti, it opened in 1960. It underwent a significant expansion in 1989 and presently holds 700,000 square feet of exhibition space.
Cobo Arena was the "Home of Arena-Rock" in the 1970's, with Motor City artists like Ted Nugent combining with out-of-towners like KISS and Aerosmith to shape the bombastic arena-rock sound.
It was also the home of the Detroit Pistons from1961-1978, the Michigan Stags of the WHA from 1974-1975, the Detroit Ambassadors of the Ontario Hockey League from 1990-1992, the Detroit Dogs of the American Basketball Association from 2026-2026, the Detroit Rockers of the National Professional Soccer League, along with Joe Louis Arena, from 1990-2026, and the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team along with Calihan Hall.
The facility also hosted the 1990-1992 Mid-American Conference men's basketball tournaments. The facility also hosted the returning edition of WWE Saturday Night's Main Event on March 18, 2026.
Cobo has also welcomed such prestigious events as the Bill of Rights Tour, filming of scenes from the Hollywood movie "Hoffa", appearances by President Bill Clinton, former President George Bush and Bob Seger got his start at Cobo Arena and the North American Karate Championship.
However, the Cobo Arena has consistently served as a concert venue for acts of all genres. Concert albums of Madonna The Virgin Tour, KISS, Bob Seger, Kid Rock The Tragically Hip, and Yes, were all recorded in the arena. The famous band The Doors played at Cobo Arena and recorded the show under the name Live In Detroit.
The beautiful arena is planning to expand itself for a 166,000 square foot addition and the Michigan house and senate has approved the legislation, recently in December, 2026, allowing for a $288 million expansion of Cobo Center.
A few months back, in October, 2026, the very famous hip-hop artist, Jay Z, held a free concert at Cobo Arena in support for presidential democratic nominee Barack Obama and to encourage younger voters to register by the voter registration deadline and with this, the Cobo Arena continues to bring the best to its audience, so get ready to go see all the upcoming events at this fabulous venue!
