Chevrolet Theatre formerly Oakdale Theatre
From 1200 seats under a tent in 1957 to 3000 seats under a wooden dome in 1972 to 4600 seats in a more conventional proscenium configuration in 1996, the journey for the Chevrolet Theatre has been a long and prosperous one, spanning a period of 50 years.
The Chevrolet Theatre is celebrating its Golden Anniversary in the year 2008. Open all the year round, The Chevrolet Theatre prides its self on its on site parking, a rarity for theatres in this era.
Originally called Oakdale Theatre, was constructed with the tent and a revolving stage design. Founder Ben Segal, assisted by his wife - Charice - started it as a summer-stock tent in the round in the middle of an alfalfa field. Segal was experiential in managing the Shubert Theater in New Haven.
The theatre included a rotating stage in the center with a restaurant enclosed n a tent. The Oakdale Theatre hosted numerous nationally known acts, including Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Beach Boys, Tom Jones, Joan Baez, and John Sebastian.
In the late 1950s Ben Segal was successful in convincing popular TV and film performers to come and perform in his canvas tent. The Oakdale popularity attracted big stars of those times such as Danny Kaye, Van Johnson, James Garner and Jerry Lewis.
Tom Jones, the Monkees and Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan performed musical shows at the then Oakdale theatre.
In 1972 the theater underwent drastic changes. A permanent dome shaped roof was added to the venue. This provided protection from the extremities of the weather. However the stage was left untouched, thereby preserving the very essence of the theater. At the same time, the seating capacity was increased from 1600 to 3200 seats.
The year 1986 witnessed the transfer of management and control of the theatre from the hands of Segal to his son Beau - a drummer in the Los Angeles music scène. Beau added the spirit of adolescence to the theatre bringing in a much youthful flavor to the offerings. Major country stars of the time, such as the Judds and John Denver, Peter, Paul and Mary, Jackson Browne and a host of rock 'n' roll performers made appearances at the Oakdale Theatre and hence added to its popularity.
In 1996 the Chevrolet Theatre underwent more changes. A more conventional proscenium configuration replaced the tent and playhouse-in-the-round format. The seating capacity was increased up to 4,600 seats. An on site parking facility was constructed. However, in an effort to preserve the original flavor of the founder"s idea, the restaurant was left as is.
Ownership of the theatre changed hands.SFX Entertainment, a worldwide corporation that operates approximately 1,213 radio and 19 television stations in the U.S., including local stations WKCI-FM and WELI-AM, purchased the Oakdale Theatre in the year 1998.
Jim Koplik, president of SFX Entertainment now known as Clear Channel Entertainment Connecticut, oversees the Oakdale operation, also running the Meadows Music Theatre in Hartford at the same time.

The Chevrolet Theatre, which had an original name of the Oakdale Theatre, is a venue made for musical concerts and other performing art activities at the city of Wallingford in Connecticut. Chevrolet Theatre had the seating capacity for 1,200- audiences, at the start, when it was opened in the year of 1957. It is interesting to mention that the start up of the venue was in tent in the middle of an alfalfa field. There was a gradual change in the facility, and t was converted into a wooden dome in the year of 1972 accommodating 3,000 seats. The venue has offered entertainment to the audiences by inviting many of the star performers like Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Beach Boys, Tom Jones and many others.
The venue had seen another change during the mid-1990s; it was a time of the transformation of the Oakdale into a year-round 5,000-seat performing arts center. The project had changed rounded quality of the theatre, to the one having the end stage. The amphitheater facilities were managed. The theatre had seen another round of extension in the year of 1995, when the new 120,000-square-foot theater had been completed for the greater number of audience to enjoy the performances. It was a mega budget project of nearly $20 million, which included the beautifully designed new theater, having the old "dome" as its lobby. There was an almost 5,000-square-foot stage house with orchestra pit and trap room, the backstage accommodations for performers and crew, a loading dock and scenery-handling area, public spaces, restrooms, and many indoor and outdoor refreshment stands were also formed. At present, it is definitely the largest theater in the entire state of Connecticut. The new theater had seen an official opening with the performances by country superstars Brooks & Dunn.
Chevrolet Theatre is known for hosting many of the important touring productions and Broadway shows. The venue has hosted performances of so many different types, like the contemporary pop, rock, R&B, country and comedy talent, in order to cater the audiences of different moods and tastes. The major performances at the venue include such great artist like David Gray, Coldplay, Steely Dan, Jerry Seinfeld, Tina Turner, Nora Jones, The White Stripes, Stone Temple Pilots, Dream Theater, Bob Dylan, Andy Williams, Britney Spears, Lewis Black, Mitch Hedberg, The Kinks, Chicago, the Beach Boys, Duran Duran and many others. The theater had also provided a room for a brief topic on the Fox animated comedy series, called 'Family Guy'. The theatre had seen some tough times, but the entrepreneurship's entry had solved the problem and audience have a fine place, to get the flavor of great music by superstars.
