Formerly known as the Youngstown Convocation Center and nicknamed The Chevy Centre and The Convo, The Chevrolet Center is a new facet to family entertainment. It is a multipurpose arena in Youngstown, Ohio, United States that saw the face of this earth in 2005.
The center is the domicile to the af2 arena football team, Mahoning Valley Thunder. Since its grand opening on October 29, 2005, with a concert by 3 Doors Down, The Chevy Centre has been responsible for a renaissance of the otherwise dead city of Youngstown.
It has been in charge of am economic revival of the city predominantly from guests patronizing its bars and restaurants before and after events. General Motors won the naming rights to the Convo and accordingly the center was named "Chevrolet" after one of the more successful cars of the company, Cobalt that is manufactured in the nearby Lords town, Ohio.
However, on October 4, 2008, General Motors announced the discontinuation of their naming rights deal with the city. Consequently, the city is currently in the process of negotiating with local Chevy dealers to leave the name of the facility unaltered.
The Chevy Centre was formerly managed by the International Coliseums Company, a subsidiary of Global Entertainment, which owns the League. Currently, Eric Ryan Productions of Struthers are acting as the interim managers and operators of the Chevrolet Center until a permanent manager can be appointed.
The first outdoor concert at the Chevrolet Centre was held on July 5, 2006, when Rivers Edge, Evans Blue, and headliner Shinedown performed in the arena's east parking lot before a massive 2,500 onlookers. The arena's first sold-out performances were on November 12, 2005, when it hosted two concerts by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The first sold-out hockey game was on January 14, 2006.
The Mahoning Valley Thunder played their first home game on March 31, 2007 and starting in November 2008, the Mahoning Valley Phantoms hockey team will also play selected home games at the arena.
Spanning an area of 169000 square feet with a total seating capacity of over 28000 for various events, the Chevrolet Center was constructed with a total outlay of $42 Million dollars.
The Center accommodates 520 Club Seats and 26 Luxury Suites. Club seats cover the first seventeen rows of the lower arena complete with priority services. The seat is a large theater-style cushioned seat with an in-seat cup holder.
Luxury suites include exclusive access to the club lounge with in-suite food, beverage and catering services VIP parking, private elevator access, corporate logo identifying company suite, access to private telephone service and much more.
There are 60 TV's located in the suites and throughout the Chevrolet Centre in totality. There are a total of 138 restroom fixtures throughout the Chevrolet Centre including 83 Women's, 53 Men's and 2 Family.
The visiting teams and artists are provided with 4 visiting locker rooms or dressing rooms and 2 Green Rooms. Plans have been made for a rodeo. The Chevrolet Centre will use 550 cubic yards of dirt for events such as PBR Rodeo to cover the performance area.
Of special mention is the Chevrolet Ice Center. The Chevrolet Centre ice is put in late September and remains for the entire Hockey season. It is covered with Athletica "Ice Deck" for events during the hockey season.
The ice at the Chevrolet Centre is 1 inch thick and sustained at 19 degrees for hockey and 24 degrees for Disney on Ice and Figure skating. There are approximately 7 miles of cooling pipes in the concrete floor under the ice that help in maintain the required temperatures.
At the Chevrolet Centre, a first aid station is located across from section 203 on the north concourse. EMS staff contracted through Humility of Mary Health Partners is on duty for all events along with an ambulance standing by for transport.
