The name of the firm was Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and the architect was Ieoh Ming Pie who designed the structure in high modernist style.
CNU Ferguson Center gained its name from Ferguson High School formally located at the same position at Warwick Boulevard. Ferguson High School was named to honor well known Homer L. Ferguson, the president of Newport News Shipbuilding from July 22, 1915 until July 31, 1946.
The high school closed in 1996, and the place was used by adjacent thriving institution with hallmark of a private liberal arts education, and magnificent facilities that few institutions can rival; Christopher Newport University the governing body of Ferguson Center.
Another factor responsible for the naming was the sponsorship given by Ferguson Enterprises for the construction of the center.

The Music and Theater Hall with the capacity of 453 seats and Studio Theater with capacity of 200 Seats were completed early. The Music and Theater Hall was opened with the performance of Tony Bennett who remarked, "They don't make theaters like this anymore!" after performing.
Later on acoustically designed Concert Hall which is the flagship auditorium was added. It contains 1,725 seats and its intelligent engineering creates the possibility of sound to travel to all seats without any microphone.
The inauguration of Concert Hall was marked with performance of The Phantom of the Opera lead actor and singer Michael Crawford in company of New York Pops on September, 12 2005.
William R. Biddle is the Executive Director of the Center. The Ferguson Center apart from the performing stages also contains rehearsal halls, dance studio, prop and costume shops, music practice rooms and educational classrooms. It has amazing Ferguson Hall Art Gallery and the Falk Gallery.
As the Ferguson Center was built under the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS) and meets the standards set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) it also provides services of limited mobility and hearing impaired audiences.
