Located at 136 Massachusetts Avenue, in Boston"s historic Back Bay, the Berklee Performance Center plays host to faculty and student shows as well as major artists. Today, the Berklee Performance Center hosts approximately 200 events each year.
The history of the state-of-the-art Venue primarily dates back to 1965, when Lawrence Berk purchased the former Hotel Bostonian at 1140 Boylston Street. He wanted turned the building into a College and ran it for several years.
By 1972, the enrollment had swelled from 584 to 1,707, hence increasing the need for more space. This made the Berklee administration and the Board of Trustees to purchase the former Sherry Biltmore Hotel at 150 Massachusetts Avenue and the adjoining Fenway Theatre in 1972.
To meet the need for a concert hall, the marvelous 1915 movie palace which was created by theater designer Thomas Lamb, was completely modernized.
Looking at the opportunity to acquire the property with a mixture of hope and anxiety, the Berklee administration invested heavily to made renovations of the Venue possible. An acoustic ceiling was installed and the theater"s stage was enlarged.
Renamed the Berklee Performance Center, the renovated theater opened its doors for public with grand opening ceremony on April 5, 1976. The Berklee Theater solved many of the college"s emerging space needs. Later, recording studios, and ensemble and rehearsals studios were also built.
Today, the Berklee Performance Center can seat up to 1,220 spectators with the latest in sound and lighting technology. It also features wheelchair accessible facility.
Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis in his dedication address called the Berklee Performance Center "An outstanding contribution to the cultural resources of Boston and State".
Over the years, the Berklee courses and majors have diversified and so has the Berklee Performance Center. In addition to showcase talents of world-renowned artists and performers, the facility equally provides opportunities to bring out hidden talents among locals. For that, the Performance Center features a laboratory for student performers, producers, and recording engineers.
The Berklee Performance Center is a showcase for live acts and a nurturing ground for emerging talent acts. It is a treat to see musical acts in the round.
