Zarkana truly manifests some of the best direction and production techniques that have ever been seen. With its story and direction by the famous Francois Girard, concept by Line Tremblay and choreography of Debra Brown, the show effectively creates a fantasy world. In 2011 the show started its tour and by 2012 established itself as a permanent act in Las Vegas. It debuted in New York at the "Radio City Music Hall" in 2011, which was later followed by performances and tours in Moscow and Madrid.
Zarkana follows an interesting plot which is precisely why it has been watched and appreciated by countless people. The story revolves around a magician who loses his love along with his magic. Crying over his situation, he is brought in contact with a world of strange creatures. The word "Zarkana" makes use of the two words, "bizarre" and "arcana" which in fact refers to the strange aura and its inhabitants.
Zark, the lead character is a talented magician who comes back to an abandoned theatre. His friend, the White Clown tries to help him in putting together a show but Zark is unable to perform his magic because of the absence of his assistant Lia, who is also the love of his life. Without her he fails to perform magic. Other characters in the play include Hocus and Pocus. They become Zark's assistants but because of their clumsiness cause nothing but trouble. The play features fifteen white clowns along with the other inhabitants of Zarkana. These include the Mad Scientist, his assistant the Pickled Lady, Kundalini, Tarantula, The movers, The Jovians, The Oracle and many other interesting characters.
Not only this, Zarkana consists of spectacular acts and other acrobatic performances. For instance, you will be able to see Ladder duo with two performers balancing the maneuvers on ladders, highwire acts, sand paintings, wheel of death, banquine, Russian bar, hand balancing, flying trapeze as well as flag manipulation. It is through these acts that the show is made even more enchanting. The songs are sung in "Cirque du Soliel's Cirquespeak", a language comprising of Italian, French, Russian and many more, and are played in the backdrop of these outstanding acts.
Perhaps, the most appealing element of Zarkana is the costumes that are created by the talented Alan Hranitelj. By working closely with all the performers, he understood their personalities and came up with costumes that would best illuminate their characters. By using so much white amidst the darkness of the show, the designer has certainly done an amazing job in making the costumes extremely attractive. Each act of the show has been assigned its own color, electrifying the aura of the Zarkana world. Inspired by the 1920s and the Art Deco movement, Hranitelj has created 250 costumes in total. Roses are especially prominent in the attires of the lead characters to reflect the love and passion for them. And the color red is seen most beautifully in the Banquine act when the two lovers, Zark and Lia finally unite.
To match the scenery with each act, the show uses LED screens as well as projected images. It creates the most impact when the snake woman, Kundalin comes on stage springing from a mound of coiled serpents. Alongside her, numerous large snakes are shown on the LED screens. All of this is presented extravagantly and truly fascinates the audience. If you want to see the magical world of Zarkana live for yourself, don't wait any more and get the Zarkana tickets now.
