The Price is Right is an American Game Show based on guessing the right prices of merchandise and Grocery Item. The Show originally started in 1956 as a creation of Bob Stewart. The show was actually created for Goodson-Todman productions and is currently held by Fremantle Media. Fremantle Media is a subsidiary of RTL Group.

The Show first premiered on NBC and was hosted by Bill Cullen. The NBC network was later known as ABC networks and the show continued to feature till 1965. The original show had a running time of 30 minutes and showed twice in a day. The show first aired in the daytimes and the nighttime by being one of the top most entertaining programs according to Nielsen ratings. Bill Cullen was considered to be one of the major elements in the success of the show. The show started off with Goodson-Todman productions which later turned into Mark Goodson Productions and was finally sold off to Fremantle group.

The original format of the show consisted of four contestant out of which one was defending winner of the previous show while three participants were new. The remaining participants were chosen from the live studio audience. The participants actually had to bid on the various items in an auction style. The participant whose bid was the closest to the actual price of the product won. The Participants had to make sure that only their last bid will be taken into consideration. If a participant was sure about his bid he had the options to freeze his offer. In the end the person who won most of the bids was declared the winner and got a call back for the next show.

The game included gift items like normal household products like furniture, appliances, home electronics, furs, trips and cars with exceptions of some lavish gift like a Rolls Royce in 1926. The Other lavish items included A Ferris wheel, Shares of corporate stock, An island in the St. Lawrence Seaway, color TV, a live peacock (as an NBC Symbol), a barbecue pit and the usual accessories, a live Angus steer, a prize package of items needed to throw a backyard party, big band legend Woody Herman & His Orchestra, a lavish raccoon coat and a highly expensive sable coat. The show continued till September 1965 when Bob Stewart left Mark Goodson Productions.

The Show was revamped in 1972 on CBS and was named as The New Price Is Right. This Time the show was hosted by Bob Barker and he continued being the anchor till 2007. In October 2007 Drew Carey of who is line is it anyway hosting started hosting the show. The revamped show came up with little alterations in the format as all the contestants now bid once and the closest bidder gets to play further. In the end after several elimination techniques only one person gets to claim the showcase. The final contestant has to guess the accumulative price of the showcase to win. The revamping has made this show one of the longest running shows in the history of Television.

The show has also been running with different alterations and versions. The Nightime price is right showing on television from 1972 till 1980. This was a syndicated series featuring every week and was anchored by Dennis James later on taken over by Bob Baker. There was also a daily Nighttime Price Is Right Show hosted by Tom Kennedy in mid 80s. The Price is Right Special was a summer series anchored by Bob baker was also carried out in 1986. Doug Davidson also hosted a short time daily series in mid 90s.

The Show also has a lot of International versions; in 1972 Australian Television featured it. The Show also featured on a UK TV in 1984 and has also been adopted all around the world. This show has also been developed as a board game by Endless Games and has also developed a DVD version. Nintendo has also developed a TV game show version for Nintendo DS console.
