He is a graduate of Williams College and the Yale School of Drama. After that, he began teaching at MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, humanities and began writing plays while teaching. He rose to fame with The Dining Room and began working full-time as a playwright. Since then, he has writing phenomenal plays, many of them focusing on the American Northeast and its many people.
While still at Yale, A. R. Gurney, The Old Boy's playwright, wrote the first ever musical produced at the Yale School of Drama, titled as Love in Buffalo. One of his most recent plays is The Grand Manner, a story based upon his real life meeting with famous actress, Katharine Cornell during her production of Antony and Cleopatra. This play premiered in 2010 at the Lincoln Center and was also staged in Buffalo at the Kavinoky Theatre.
The Old Boy is one of his several plays. He has also written a number of novels, most notably The Gospel According to Joe, The Snow Ball and Entertaining Strangers. He has written a total of forty six plays to date. He has received many an award and honor, and was elected as a member of the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2006.
