Written by the great William Shakespeare, the Merchant of Venice is a tragic comedy believed to be penned between the years 1596 and 1598. The setting of the book is placed in the beautiful city of Venice amid three men Antonio, Shylock and Bassanio; Antonio being the lead character of the play. The Merchant of Venice revolves around a dramatized tale of finding true love and the gruesome problem of repaying the Jewish moneylender his loan back. Even though the first folio of the book rants of romantic comedies, the ending can be categorized as being dramatically imperishable.

This artistic piece of writing gained acclaimed fame and knowledge due to Shylock’s merciless character and his speech called “Hath not a Jews’ eyes”. In addition to this another feature that led to play’s recognition was the the lovely Portia’s speech called the “Quality of mercy” when she is trying to save Antonio’s life from the hands of Shylock. The very first performance of this play was in the year 1605 held at the court of King James, after which several shows followed. Being insulted for his interest-taking business practices by Antonio and his comrades, Shylock lived to get his revenge in time. Other characters that play a major part in the story are Portia, the love of Bossanio’s life who is a wealthy heiress in Belmont. Bossanio is a gentleman living in the city of Venice and also a dear friend of Antonio. The story starts when Bossanio wishes to visit Belmont in style to impress his love, Portia and win over her hand in marriage. For this purpose he asks his dear friend, Antonio for a loan, but due to financial constraints they visit the Jewish moneylender for an interest free loan. Brooding in hopes of revenge, Shylock decides to provide them with an interest free loan on the condition that Antonio provides a piece of his flesh if the loan isn’t rendered back on time. With time, Antonio’s business hits a dry end and he is forced by Shylock to meet his end of the contract, and then starts the struggle to save dear Antonio’s life from the hands of Shylock.
