This isn't going to be Sydney Theatre Company's first go at the play, as the company staged it from Australian audience back in 2013. The production earned rave reviews from the critics and fans alike and the same is expected from its upcoming staging at the New York City Center.
The Maids made its world premiere on April 17, 1947 when it was hosted at the Theatre de I'Athenee in Paris. The play was also adapted as a chamber opera and a feature film later on. The plot of the play loosely circles around the tragedy of Papin Sisters, who gruesomely murdered their employer as well as her daughter in 1933. Although the play isn't an exact portrayal of the Papin Sisters' incident but it does revolve around the same premise. The story of the play circles around three main characters of the play - Solange, Claire and Madame. As the plot unfolds the two sisters, Solange and Claire, construct a role-playing ritual that centers on the murder of their employer, Madame. With their role-playing, the two sisters take turns at portraying Madame and experience the sense of power divide between the social status of a maid and an employer. The level of emotion and detail depicted within all these scenarios have to be seen to be truly appreciated. So catch this limited time production the play with the Maids tickets.
