Dr Sloper thinks that only by setting up his daughter’s share in his property, he has fulfilled his paternal obligation and there is no other responsibility on him on part of his daughter. The regular and monotonous life of Catherine takes a twist with the introduction of the handsome young boy, Morris. Deprived of love, she looks up to him for filling in the empty spaces in her life with affection and believes that these feelings are mutual. Morris does have a pleasant attitude towards her, but can this be called love? Dr Sloper has a completely different opinion at this. He perceives him nothing more than a callow fortune hunter who is just attracted towards her for a purpose. The differences in opinion breeds contempt in between in the family and the reality remains the point of suspense till the end of the play. Dr Sloper, of experiences stays put on his point of view about Morris and to discourage Catherine from pursuing any relationship further with him, threatens to cuts her off her dowry. This also happens to be a test with a hidden purpose for Morris, who successfully fails it by disappearing from the scene.
