The plot of the musical centers on two main characters, named Robert Kincaid and Francesca Johnson. Kincaid had spent some time in the military before he found his true passion which was photography. While working for the National Geographic, he gets an assignment to go to Madison County. There he meets Francesca of Italian origin who had married an American soldier and moved to the U.S to Madison County. When Robert stops at her house to ask for directions, her husband and children are out of town for a state fair. The two of them get attracted to each other immediately and fall in love to set the basis of one of the most moving stories of its time.
The Bridges of Madison County was first written by Robert James Waller. Waller was a man of many talents, even at a very young age. He completed his studies from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and got his doctorate from the Indiana University. After college, he joined UNI as a professor of management, economics and applied mathematics and then became the Dean of College of Business. He also played music in several underground bars and clubs and was a professional photographer as well.
In 1992, his book first came out and became an international success. It made it to the top of the New York Times best sellers list and managed to stay there for over three years. It was generally favorably received by critics and the storyline was praised in all quarters. Waller himself wrote several books after Madison County but none came even close to the fame that this book garnered all over the world.
In 1991, even before the book was released, its rights were bought by Steven Spielberg's production company that set about trying to convert it in to a feature length film. The world famous actor Clint Eastwood was brought in to direct it and play the lead role opposite Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep. The movie turned out to be an international hit and was well received by critics and fans alike. It became the foremost love story in American history and is still considered to be a true Hollywood classic.
Now the same story has been turned in to a musical and it has lost none of its charm in the process. Directed by multiple Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, this is a play that will transform time and take its audiences on a journey through Madison County itself. The music of the show has won two Tony and Drama Desk Awards each. The music of the play was made by the exemplary Jason Robert Brown, who is one of the most accomplished music directors, composers, orchestrators, and pianists in Broadway today.
