Born on the twentieth of March in 1956, Stephen Petronio is a dance choreographer and artistic director, who is also the founder of the Stephen Petronio Dance Company. Petronio was born in a small city of New Jersey named Newark. Completing his education from the Hampshire College situated in Massachusetts, Petronio started pursuing professional dancing in the year 1974. Prior to moving towards a dancing career, the artist had acquired a pre-medical degree but became enthused by the dances of two colleagues with whom he had taken improvisation classes. These two colleagues, Steve Paxton and Rudolf Nureyev were Petronio's inspiration. He then decided to join the Trisha Brown Company in 1979. He became the first and only male dancer in this company. Petronio stayed with the company and performed with it till 1986 after which he decided to fully work with his own establishment, the Stephen Petronio Dance Company.
Over the years, Petronio has worked with numerous artists and created works for several famous dance companies. A few of the artists he has worked with include Rufus Wainwright, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Michael Nyman, James Lavelle, Diamanda Galas, Sheila Chandra, The Beastie Boys and Yoko Ono. Petronio has created new works for companies such as the National Dance Company Wales, the Tulsa Opera, Ballet de Lorraine, the Lyon Opera Ballet, the Deutsche Opera Berlin, the Riccohet Dance Company of London and the Maggio Danza Florence. For his lifelong contributions to dance, Petronio has received numerous awards and recognitions over the years. His very first award includes the New York Dance & Performance Award which he won in 1986, the American Choreographer Award which he received in 1987, and the 1999 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award in which he was given a grant as well. Petronio was then inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in the year 2007. He has also received several fellowships over the years, a few of which include the Guggenheim Fellowship which he received in 1988, choreography fellowships granted to him by National Endowment for the Arts from 1985 to 1988. The creative artist has also had the pleasure to receive the New York State Council grant which he started receiving from 1988 and the Advancement Program Grant which he received in 1994.
Stephen Petronio established his dance company in the year 1984 and has been successfully operating this company for over twenty five years now.
