Based on the 1911 novel of the same name originally written by Frances Hodgson Burnett , The Secret Garden is set in the early 20th century during the British Raj era. The story line is extremely interesting and is based on the experiences of a young girl of eleven years of age who loses her parents during the cholera outbreak. The musical focuses on the ups and downs in the life of Mary and how she overcomes them. Her relationship with her uncle Archibald Craven and her cousin Colin is very well depicted throughout the play. The main protagonist of the play, Mary Lennox is a happy go lucky child who was born and brought up at India to British parents. Her relations at England do not welcome her arrival at all even though it is the house of her aunt Lily, her mother’s sister who is no more alive. Her uncle Archibald Craven, a hunchback is anguished by his very existence and lacks interest in routine affairs of the house. He has given charge of the mansion to his brother Dr. Neville Craven. Archibald’s son is forcefully bed ridden since birth as his father though that he might also turn out to be a hunchback.
The mansion is haunted by ghosts who dance to songs of Lily and Archibald. Upon an incidence with a small bird, Mary discovers a hidden garden which no one knows about. The garden is dormant and unlively and Mary decides to put life into the garden. She wants to help her cousin Colin and revive the memories of her aunt back into the mansion. Her uncle’s brother Dr. Neville Craven plays a negative role in the whole drama and tries to create hurdles for Mary so that he can send her to boarding school.
With the help of a few people she lets her dreams live and also brings her cousin Colin back to life. Her struggle of enabling Archibald overcomes his grief and her efforts to bring the real life back in the mansion are beautifully captured by this musical. You will feel sympathetic and proud of Mary at the same time as you see a little girl’s efforts in creating a cheerful environment in the mansion. Each incident appearing in the play is backed by wonderful musical themes and songs that will just take your heart away.
