RAIN is a show that initially began as a branch of Broadway’s show, ‘Beatlemania’. Beatlemania started in 1977 and ran till 1979, having 920 performances in total. It focused on the Beatles’ life as a band and all the transformations they underwent. The show was a documentary that featured their music and lyrics. Lynda Obst, Bob Gill and Robert Rabinowitz wrote its book and the production even got nominated for a Tony Award in 1978. The performance was later transformed into a movie, ‘Beatlemania: The Movie’ and featured Tom Teeley, Ralph Castelli, David Leon and Mitch Weissman. In 1980, a tribute band by the name of ‘The Cast of Beatlemania’ was formed and had the Broadway’s former artists as its members.
RAIN, formerly known as ‘Reign’, is a band that got together in 1970s. They played Beatles’ songs at California’s clubs. Not long after their inception, the group changed their name to ‘RAIN’. In 1979, Dick Clark saw their talent and recruited them for his movie, ‘Birth of the Beatles’. Until 1982, the band did not have any connection to Beatlemania, the Broadway show. However, after that the cast members started joining it and RAIN became officially affiliated to the show.
Artists who are or have been a part of the RAIN cast in the past are Chuck Coffey, Joey Curatolo, Ian B. Garcia and Robert Ruffing as Paul McCartney. Eddie Lineberry, Jim Irizarry and Steve Landes have taken up the role of John Lennon. Joe Bithorn, Jimmy Pou, Tom Teeley and Bill Connearney have acted as George Harrison and Doug Cox, Chris McBruney and Grant Belotti as Ringo Starr.
Currently, the members perform interchangeably for different shows. Almost all of them do the vocals while performing other specific roles. The members with their roles are Steve Landes (rhythm guitar, harmonica and piano), Joey Curatolo (lead guitar), Ralph Castelli (percussion and drums) and Tom Teeley (lead guitar, sitar and guitar synth). Others include Chris Smallwood (percussion and keyboard), Douglas Cox (percussion and drums), Jim Irizarry (piano, harmonica and rhythm guitar), Jimmy Pou (guitar synth and lead guitar) and Mac Ruffing (guitar, bass and piano). Chris McBurney is on drums and Ian B. Garcia is the guitarist. Mark Beyer does percussion and keyboard and Mark Lewis is the lead keyboardist, manager and the group’s founder as well.
In 2010, RAIN ran more than three hundred times on Broadway and has stayed a successful show for many years. It is also the winner of a Drama Desk Award in the category of ‘Outstanding Musical Revue’.
