Po Boy Tango
Northlight Theater has scheduled to produce the world premiere of Kenneth Lins Po Boy Tango. A winter show about the pleasures and cross-cultural possibilities of cooking, PoBoy Tango is a workshop production, featuring many conundrums.
Telling the story of Rihie Po, PoBoy Tango is a celebration of the human spirit and the joy of cooking. PoBoy Tango contains an unusual story bringing two cultures together out of human need, contrasting their ideas and ideals and finally bringing them together in the kitchen of the restaurant they share as a business.
With the addition of a provisional set, lightening and sound cues to the actors mesmerizing performances, the vivid experience will make you watch this production over and over again. The story of the play revolves around the character of an ex-pat Taiwanese called Richie Po.
After the death of his mother, Richie Po takes over the Grand Banquet in Taiwan. He wants to recreate the Grand Banquet for his soon to be married daughter.
Richies mother had prepared the Grand Banquet many years ago in Taiwan. However, he lacks the culinary skill to pull it together. Richie still has the taste of his deceased mother in his memory.
With recipes and video tapes from his mama, Po longs to utilize his technical knowledge to prepare this Banquet. He sends for a well-rounded African American, Gloria who duly arrives during a thunderstorm.
Upon her arriving at Pos house, there is an immediate hostility. The two have challenges of underlying cultural tensions, shark fin soup and duck poboy sandwiches. After the thaw, and much persuasion, Richie enlists Gloria in his grand banquet scheme.
Despite causes of hostility, Richie and Gloria both find common ground through their shared humor and the blending of traditional Taiwanese cuisine and African-American Soul Food.
Po Mamas Cooking Show- a Cooking Channel for Taiwanese Cuisine is shown which is quite interesting and extraordinary especially for those who love cooking. The lessons of cooking show help Po and Gloria and they later discover a deeper understanding of food, culture and the nature of friendship.
The play progresses while showing momentary, stand-offs and (often) severe encounters between the two. The moment when Gloria takes Richies keys so she can get back in the house, is developed a new problem.
Since there is an obvious problem under the surface, in the second act the impending storm between Richie and Gloria bursts.
The play is followed by emotional arguments over race, ethnicity, and the sufferings the two endured in the past to get to this present moment. The production ends with Gloria and Richie seated hand in hand front center stage with tears running down their faces.
It would not be wrong to say that we rarely see an examination of racial bias between minorities, neither of which is Caucasian. Similarly, we rarely see a writer display such courage and creativity in context. PoBoy Tango is certainly the refreshment of ideas through a different lens as well as a welcome change of theatrical pace.
