After the retirement of James Canfield in 2003, Christopher Stowell took the charge of that position after being a principal dancer of San Francisco Ballet for 16 years. Dancing was in his blood as he was son to well known Artistic Directors of Pacific Northwest Ballet, Kent Stowell and Francia Russell. But it wasn't just his parents that got him that far, but also his deep knowledge and dedication along with his broad training that can be noticed in all of his programs. During his period as an artistic director of OBT, Oregon Ballet Theatre organized several programs including first performance by new choreographers such as James Kudelka, Christopher Wheeldon, Julia Adam, Trey McIntyre and Yuri Possokhov.
In 2004 highly acclaimed Adin was choreographed by Mr. Stowell that included four songs by Sergei Rachmaninov, and three out of these four songs were rearranged by Niel DePonte, who is the Music Director of Oregon Ballet Theatre. Christopher Stowell's very own Swan Lake was performed by Oregon Ballet Theatre in 2006 and all the performances were totally sold out.
The following year in collaboration with multi media artist James Buckhouse, Mr. Stowell choreographed a new Ballet the Impending hour, which contained the music of Ravel. Apart from that in 2006 he also choreographed a tribute to Cole Porter, Eyes on You, that was a huge success and got encore in Oregon Ballet theatre's 2006-2007 season.
Oregon Ballet Theatre also runs the School of Oregon Ballet Theatre. Damara Bennett was selected as the Director of the school in 2003. During that period the enrollment rate in the School of Oregon Ballet theatre improved 30%, taking a count of 200 students. Just like OBT, School of OBT is also known for giving highly successful performances.
