Published back in 1937, Of Mice and Men's first incarnation was in the form of a novella that came from the pen of John Steinbeck. The novella is considered to be Steinbeck's one of the most celebrated and prized creations, which went on to enjoy global fame apart from influencing various forms of media as well. The plot of the novella is set during the times of Great Depression in California and the two main characters of the story, Lennie Small and George Milton, had to move from one place to another in search of job in those dire times. Amidst all the controversy and the negative criticism that the novella garnered from some of the critics, Carlisle Floyd successfully translated this tragic tale into an amazing opera which is now considered as one of the important contributions to the American opera history. The opera had its very first run back in 1970, and since then it has been attracting a steady number of patrons to the theatres. So if you wish to catch the opera with your own eyes then grab your Of Mice and Men tickets today.
Before the novella could be translated into an opera, the very first mainstream adaptation of it occurred back in 1939 when it emerged on the big screen as a feature movie starring Burgees Meredith and Lon Chaney Jr. The movie was directed by Lewis Milestone and it met with great success which later showed when it was nominated for four Academy Awards. Prior to that, while the novella was still in the Best-Sellers, a play by the same name also premiered at the Music Box Theatre but it failed to leave a mark. A TV version of the story also made way in 1968 which was then followed by the opera in 1970.
The opera made its world premiere at the Moore Theatre by the Seattle Opera back on January 22, 1970. Soon after its premiere, the opera turned out to be a huge success and it embedded the reputation of Carlisle Floyd as a fan favorite composer. The opera also received positive reviews from most of the critics. As of the moment, the opera is performed all across the nation quite frequently from time to time. Back in 2004 a recording of the opera was also produced by Albany Records. Under the direction of Bruce Beresford, a renowned Australian director, the opera was also performed at the Opera Australia in 2011. In 2013, it was also performed by the Sarasota Opera.
In 2012, the opera was also performed by the Utah Opera in the Salt Lake City. Just like its predecessors, the Salt Lake City production of the opera also enjoyed great success and turned out to be a triumphant endeavor for the company as well as Floyd. In the success of the production, the Utah Symphony played a vital role in perfectly conveying the emotions and drama of the characters to the audience members under the leadership of the conductor James Lowe.
Now after enjoying success from staged by various opera companies across the country, the opera lovers in California will get to witness the opera for limited time only as it is staged by the California Theatre of the Performing Arts. Ever since the release of the Steinbeck's novella, the story has touched the hearts of many. And later as the success of the novella later resulted into an opera by Floyd himself, it turned it into a huge success as well. To date, the opera has been watched by hundreds of thousands of people all across the nation by one Opera Company or the other. Years after its world premiere, the opera doesn't stops to inspire and touch its viewers. So if you have been waiting to catch it in a theatre near you, then now is the time to get your Of Mice and Men tickets.
