Flamenco is thought to be rather intriguing dance form to watch but is very challenging for the performers as well the audiences. No wonder dance fans would go out of the way to watch Flamenco. Especially when it is a feature presentation by Flamenca with Barrio leading onstage, they just cannot resist. Since the Noche Flamenca started in 1993, it has been working on reviving the tradition of Flamenco. This company became successful for giving a new face to the dance form with its very own creations. It tours whole year long performing at venues all over the world.
The Flamenca has a record of great success in theaters in North America (especially NYC), Argentina, Egypt and Greece. The company's creativity and hard work has been hailed by critics and praised the world over. It has many more awards and honors in its portfolio, some of their most prominent achievements are the 2006 National Dance Project Award for their outreach programs, the National Endowment for Arts Award for supporting their cause of educational support in 2007 & 2008 and the Lucile Lortel Award for Best Theatrical Experience.
Noche Flamenco brings its dance troupe and musicians to stage for a two-hour show of various acts. These acts have been designed with great care and passion, so all of them are stupendous from the start to the end. The show's highlight however is the solo act by Barrio along with a trio of women. The act is the opening one and it is loaded with heartwarming emotion. Barrio keeps you hooked with her dance flair and seductive moves until she disappears behind the curtain. She says everything when her body hunches, arched, her hands and feet move and her eyes sing. Barrio does all this and much more at an amazing speed. She alternates her moods from fierce to calm and sober and sweeps everyone off their feet. The show's wonderful live singers and a duo of guitarists back her dance.
Martin Santangelo as the company's artist director has brought forth an extraordinary season. For this show he has brought Flamenco in a very simple and appealing way, especially for audiences with little or no know-how of Flamenco. This presentation is authentic but the art form is showcased in a theatrical way that ensures that all acts are entertaining and easy to relate to. Santangelo has made this evening with the Flamenca a show for everyone. His chorographers, dance troupe, production team and backstage crew have also worked endlessly to make his season a success.
S. Benjamin Farrar's set design is an important part of the show, which gives it a feel of a complete theatrical drama. Vocals by female lead Carmina Cortes and male leads Pepe el Bocadillo and Manuel Gago are very strong. They are backed by powerful play of guitars by Eugenio Iglesias and Salva de Maria.
