One of America's leading opera houses, the Lyric Opera of Chicago is recreating the classic Italian libretto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte, 'The Marriage of Figaro.' The opera house's 2015 season is all set to put on stage multiple shows of this four-act comic that was written back in 1786.
Accredited as being the keystone opera of the standard repertoire, 'The Marriage of Figaro' is among the most performed operas in the world. This time, this classic tale full of backroom maneuverings and salon drama will be performed by the talented performers of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The show has been directed by Barbara Gaines. Lyricists include European stars such as Christiane Karg and Adam Plachetka. This entirely new production will recreate Mozart's masterpiece with extravagant costumes and exquisite set designs made from scratch. Do not miss out on this hilarious distortion of manner, morals and identities.
The Marriage of Figaro is an adaptation of the story 'La folle journee, ou le Mariage de Figaro' written by Pierre Beaumarchais in 1784. The premiere of the libretto was held on 1st May, 1786 at the Burgtheater located in Vienna. The opera was among the very first collaborations between Lorenzo Da Ponte and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Even though, Pierre Beaumarchais' production was originally banned in Vienna due to its licentious nature, Mozart took the risk of remaking the opera and removing all bold political references from the storyline.
With Ponte's help, the original story was rewritten entirely in poetic Italian. At its debut, Mozart conducted all the performances himself and after nine shows, the first production ended successfully. Later that year, Vienna's emperor requested for a special performance of The Marriage of Figaro which took place at his palace's theater. Other early performances include production by the Pasquale Bondini Company (Prague) and a revival in 1789. Since then, this Italian libretto has been revived and showcased all over the world and has gone on to become one of the most watched operas in history.
The story of The Marriage of Figaro is the second part of the Figaro trilogy written by Beaumarchais; the first being 'The Barber of Seville' and the last one named 'The Guilty Mother.' The story of 'The Marriage of Figaro' is a continuation of 'The Barber of Seville', in which a Spanish count Almaviva falls in love with Rosine. Figaro who is the count's ex-servant, currently working as a barber, helps him meet Rosine and both of them confess their love for one another. In the end, the count successfully weds Rosine.
The Marriage of Figaro starts three years after the wedding. At this point, Figaro is engaged to a girl named Suzanne. However, the count has already grown weary of his bride, Rosine, and now has his eyes set on Figaro's fiancée, Suzanne. Watch this rebellious Italian tale, as Figaro helps Suzanne escape from the devilish snare of the count. Watch the spectacle combined with the classical compositions by Mozart some of which include 'Cosi fan tutte le belle,' 'No. 11 Cavatina Porgi, amor' and 'Dove sono.'
Actors playing the lead roles from the Lyric Opera of Chicago include Adam Plachetka taking on the role of the capable Figaro, Christiane Karg playing Suzanne, Luca Pisaroni appearing as the Spanish count Almaviva and Amanda Majeski as Rosine (now countess Almaviva). This incredibly talented cast is one of the biggest reasons why this latest reincarnation of The Marriage of Figaro promises to be a wonderful spectacle.
Theater fans are in for a treat as this unique production by one of America's premier opera houses takes to the stage yet again. This is your chance to book Lyric Opera of Chicago tickets and catch one of the most famous classical productions in history, live.
