The company truly illustrates the timeliness of work and vision of its founder, Jose Limon. In addition to provide top-notch dance entertainment, the Limon Dance Company conducts an array of programs including master classes, workshops, lectures, seminars and pre and post-performance talks.

After World War II, Jose Arcadio Limon founded the Jose Limon Dance Company in 1946 with Doris Humphrey as the first artistic director. Jose Limon enjoyed a status of a pioneering modern dancer and choreographer.

He led the foundation of the first modern dance company to have mutually distinct positions for founder and artistic director. With an approach to movement that has shaped subsequent generations of dancers and artists, the unique modern dance repertory company was joined by Pauline Koner, Lucas Hoving, Betty Jones, Ruth Currier, and Limon himself.

Today, the Companys repertory, noted for balancing classic works with commissions from contemporary choreographers, is of an unparalleled breadth. The companys masterworks are staged by a select group of artists and an array of world-renowned theater ensembles.

Many of the artists associated with Limon Dance Company have worked with Limon and are offering moments of discovery and inspiration to both audiences and dancers. These masterpieces are a rewarding challenge for dancers and a proven success with audiences around the world. The Limons repertory is creating unique experiences for audiences around the world.

Some of the world-known theater ensembles that have performed Limons dances include American Ballet Theater, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater, Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, as well as numerous conservatory and college ensembles.

Their choreographic works resonate with the human experience, ranging from dramatic narratives to joyous celebrations to lyrical suites. At Limons, The Reconstructors is a unique group of artists who have worked with Jason Limon. Linking to Limons creative process and output, the reconstructors have brought years of performing, teaching, and coaching experience to each staging.

The reconstructor, as a representative of the Limon tradition and Foundation, has full artistic control over the production of the dance. The Limon Dance Company acquires a work for three years. In recent years, works have been licensed to Pacific Northwest Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Pennsylvania Ballet, and LOpera de Bordeaux.

These works have been staged by Betty Jones, Gary Masters, Jennifer Scanlon, Sarah Stackhouse, Risa Steinberg, Clay Taliaferro, and Nina Watt. The length of time required to stage a dance varies with the work chosen. A typical staging is generally accomplished within a 4-5 week intensive residency.

The Unsung is a tribute to the American Indian and the prowess of the male dancer, performed to only the sounds of stamping, running, leaping, and breathing. A choreographic offering is a tribute to Limons mentor, Doris Humphrey and is based on movements from her dances.
