He saves him and then eventually Marius (the lover) and Cosette gets married.

Now Valjean is broken as he feels that Cosette doesn't need him anymore. Marius also tries to keep her away from Valjean as he considers him a personality having poor character. But he finds about his good deed when Valjean is already on his death bed. Mainly the focus of the drama is on legalism.
