Mozart purchased a copy of Beaumarchais's play to da Ponte, and converted it into a libretto in six weeks time. He translated the story into Italian poetry, and removed all political aspects.
Opposed to the popular myth, the libretto was accepted by the Emperor, Joseph II, much before any music was written by Mozart. Figaro was performed at the Burgtheater, Vienna, on May 1, 1786. It was hugely popular, but only had 9 performances.
The Emperor is believed to have introduced a law regarding the number of encores that could be sung at Figaro performances. This was in response to audience demands made in opera that was as 4 hours long. This was due to the song repetitions.
A Vienna revival production in 1789 saw W.A. Mozart substituted both arias of Susanna with new compositions. These were more appropriate for the then singer of Susanna, Adriana Ferrarese del Bene.

A phrase taken from The Marriage of Figaro, ["Cosi fan tutte le belle"], was introduced in the overture to Così fan tutte. Figaro's Act One finale aria, Non più andrai, is introduced as the march of the Coldstream Guards. This is mentioned in the second act of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni.
