Sitting 3000 ft above in his cave, the furry green creature plots the burglary of Christmas & its happiness by robbing the Whos of their Christmas decorations, holiday ham & precious gifts. As songs like “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” & “Welcome Christmas” play in the background, the Grinch finalizes his evil schemes, thinking that can “stop Christmas from coming” & halt the bubbly irrepressible cheer of the Whos. The Grinch then proceeds to pull off the heist with his grudgingly obedient dog Max. His “two times too small” heart is ecstatic after the burglary, but to his surprise, the Whos still keep on singing at Christmas’ arrival, partying with great fervor. The Grinch has nightmares & understands the full nature of Christmas, as a time of celebration not subservient to any material gifts or possessions. Remorseful, he has a meeting with Cindy Lou Who, & is thoroughly ashamed of his acts, admitting his faults. The ever-forgiving Whos take him in to the community, & the Grinch is inculcated with Max saying the final words “In Who-ville they say / That the Grinch’s small heart / Grew three times that day!”. Mel Marvin contributes the music to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with Albert Hague also aiding. The late Hague was a German-born veteran of Broadway plays such as The Fig Leaves Are Falling & Redhead. Historian Timothy Mason wrote the lyrics, which contains mostly the original work of Dr. Seuss, and also wrote the book for the musical. John DeLuca was in charge of choreography for the original musical, which debuted on stage in November 1994 at the Minneapolis’s Children’s Theater Company. Special arrangements had to be made prior to the showing with the Dr. Seuss estate regarding the adaptation.
