Grand Rapids Ballet is often abbreviated as GRB. It was the brainchild of acclaimed Art Director Sally Seven. He founded this company in 1971 as Grand Rapids Civic Ballet. In the year 1983 a conservatory school by the name of Summerfest School of Grand Rapids was also founded solely with the intent of developing trained dancers. These two were later merged and GRB was founded along with School of Grand Rapids Ballet Company. Soon two immensely talented people were hired for GRB namely Art Director Gordon Pierce Schmidt and Associate Director Laura Berman. Under the guidance of these two Grand Rapids Ballet's popularity soared to new heights. Soon the company was able to get an abandoned bus garage which was later renovated and transformed into a huge school as well as dance rehearsal facility venue.

 

Over the years Grand Rapids Ballet has been gradually growing. In 2006 it underwent massive expansion that cost $7.5 million. Currently GRB consists of a number of production and performance artists. Current Director of School as well as Art Director is Patricia Barker is among the world's most acclaimed ballerinas. Executive Director is Glenn Del Vecchio who is an intelligent entrepreneur, managing this non-profit ballet company. Attila Mosolygo is a Hungarian born ballet expert who is working as Junior Company Art Director. Mosolygo got his initial training from the National Ballet Institute in Budapest. Currently GRB is working with twenty four highly gifted ballet dancers which includes names like Megan DeMuro, Dawnell Dryja, Connie Flachs, Steven Houser, Cassidy Isaacson, Yuka Oba, Monica Pelfrey, Stephen Sanford, Laura McQueen Schultz and Nicholas Schultz.

 

In the past Gran Rapids Ballet has produced classic productions like Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Program 3, Amazed in Burning Dreams, The Sofa, Light Rain, The Four Temperaments and Romeo & Juliet. Besides classic productions GRB has also designed some of its own ballet shows such as Carnival of the Animals, MOVEMEDIA and Spring Gala - An Evening in Verona. There are also some fine ballet performances that have been planned for the coming months such as Dracula, Rubies, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

 

There will be a kickoff event by the name of Season Kick-Off Party at the Ballet. This event is often referred to as a whirlwind opening performance that showcases most of the GRB ballet dancers. This party has also been showcased in other parts of the world as well in Japan and Vietnam. Some of the dancers that will feature in the Kick-Off Party are Cassidy Isaacson, Nicholas Schultz, Steven Houser, Yuka Oba and              Kyohei Giovanni Yoshida. GRB has a special junior dancer group that performs ballets for kids like Peter Pan, Mother Goose & Friends and Who Am I? A Butterfly.
