Directed by Michael Wilson and written by Elizabeth Egloff, Ether Dome brings to the audience a unique approach as people usually don't get to see live shows on such topics. The director, Michael Wilson has served the Hartford Stage for over ten years. He has directed seventeen productions for the theater including, Eve Ensler's Necessary Targets, the premiere of Horton Foote's The Carpetbagger's Children, William's The Glass Menagerie, Shakespeare's Macbeth and O Neil's Long Day's Journey Into Night. Some of the Broadway productions that hit the stage under his leadership include, The Best Man, The Trip to Bountiful, Enchanted and Dividing the Estate.
Apart from the Hartford Stage, Michael Dome has also worked with the Guthrie Theater, Alley Theater, The Shakespeare Theater and the American Repertory Theater. For his years of service to the theater world, the director has been honored with a number of awards, including the Drama Desk Award, Deryl Roth Creative Spirit Award, Outer Critics Circle Award and the Tom Killen Award. Michael's expertise can be seen in the upcoming theatrical production, Ether Dome. The director is reported to have said, “I am excited to return to the Huntington with Elizabeth Egloff's exhilarating play about America's greatest medical discovery, anesthesia.”
Apart from great direction, the play's story has also earned an amazing feedback from the critics. The writer, Elizabeth Egloff is also credited for penning The Swan, The Lover and Phaedra, Peter Pan and Wendy, The Devils and Wolf-Man. An artistic director, Christopher Ashley has praised Egloff and her new play in the following words, “I am so drawn to the big idea at the center of Liz Egloff's new play: that our noble aspirations to alleviate suffering are undone by our innate human failings.” Another colleague from the theater world has shared his views by saying, “Elizabeth Egloff's thrilling new exploration of a revolution in modern medicine unfolds in our own back yard, and our collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital will illuminate a lesser-known chapter of our city's rich history.”
The biographical drama, Ether Dome has a solid central narrative with cinematic short scenes that make the whole play much more interesting. Ether Dome takes the audience back in the 40s when a team of three doctors were working day and night to discover a medicine that would reduce pain. The play is based on a true story, in which most of the scenes take place at the set of the General Hospital, where the discovery actually took place back in the 18th century. Apart from that, the spectators get to see period costumes, along with lively sound and light designs.
Ether Dome also unfolds the story of Morton, who was credited for discovering ether and was actually a con man, who was wanted in fourteen states. Many other interesting facts and realities are portrayed in this play so that the audience gets the real picture about what actually happened and how was ether invented. Some of the actors playing the characters of George Livingston, Dr. John Warren, William Morton and Dr. Henry Bigelow have garnered an amazing feedback from multiple theater critics. If you're a theater lover and are looking for pure entertainment, delay no more in reserving the best Ether Dome tickets before they're all gone.
