Cirque du Soleil is a Canada based entertainment company. It is an amalgamation of street entertainment and circus arts. It was founded in the year 1984 at Baie-Saint-Paul in Quebec, Canada by two former street performers named Daniel Gauthier and Guy Laliberté. They were initially called Les Échassiers, and in 1980 toured Quebec and came across many financial problems. These financial constraints were removed by a grant given by the government in 1983.This financial aid emerged as a result of the celebrations of Jacques Cartier's discovery of Canada. After completing two years of commercially successful tours, Guy Caron, a professional from National Circus School, was hired by the founders to convert the venture into a proper circus. Nevertheless, the unique features of Cirque du Soleil were maintained by maintaining its original theatrical look and not including animals in its performances, thus maintaining the identity of contemporary circus.

After several years of successful business, the management decided to open another aspect of entertainment for the audience, targeted specifically to adults. The new production was named Zumanity, and has continued to perform since September 2003. Its format is like a cabaret, in which the audience is seated on tables while performances take place close to them, instead of a separate stage. Zumanity was based at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino on the main Boulevard of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Strip. In this production, for the first time, adult entertainment themes were introduced, thus the show being labeled as ‘The Sensual Side of Cirque du Soleil.’ The format of Zumanity is also very different from the rest of Cirque du Soleil productions, as it usually involves songs that have an erotic theme that is accompanied by a compatible dancing style. The dancers also amuse the audience with the exhibition of acrobatics and their exquisite capability to maneuver their bodies.

Laliberte, on having an option to begin two new shows in Las Vegas, expressed his opinion that he did not want to start the stereotyped dance and music shows like so many running already in the city. He instead wanted to create something unique and original that, apart from being a totally new idea, should be able to attract a significant audience to make it a commercial success. He believed that creating something similar to the shows already running would be a waste of time and resources, as it just gives people an option to choose from similar entertainment at different venues instead of variety. They just snatch each other’s sales and do not offer anything different. Also, the management of the venue, The New York- New York Hotel and Casino, also appreciated the idea of an adult themed performance as it would be more in keeping with the latest trend in entertainment. The idea for the show was brought to reality by two of the renowned directors for Cirque du Soleil, Dominic Champagne and Rene Richard Cyr. 

Another reason for creating the show was that the producer, Laliberte was interested in giving his audience an experience that was completely different from the traditional, family oriented circus style. An exploration of human sexuality and adult themed entertainment gave this show a look and style completely different and unmatched by any of the contemporary shows.

Since 2003, the show has been running successfully, drawing audiences bigger and bigger with every passing show, and giving Cirque experience a whole new style.
