Everyone can now mark their calendars for the annual event that is Christmas with Cornils! Every single year, Friends of the Kotschmar Organ - FOKO - put together and present more than twenty events and concerts. These events feature organists, as well as guest artists from around the world.
Christmas with Cornils tickets are now available for this popular event, celebrating the holiday spirit. It is a great event and treasured tradition for the whole family, and has remained so for many years.
Christmas with Cornils - A Kotzschmar Christmas will take place at the Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine on December 23. Each year this performance is lead by Ray Cornils, who is a member of the music faculty over at the University of Maine, and has held the position of Portland's Municipal Organist since 1990. Before coming to Maine, Ray Cornils was part of the music faculty at Tufts University in Boston as well as the Brookline Music School. He was also the organist of the New England Baroque Ensemble and has also served as the music director of the United Parish, Brookline. Cornils is no new name to the global music scene and has performed such concerts throughout Germany, France, Russia, United States and New Zealand.
The concert features the very famous and, somewhat iconic, Kotzschmar Organ, which is one of the oldest functioning municipal pipe organs in the US. For its upcoming performances, fans of the Kotzschmar Organ will get to hear new selections, as well as holiday classics at the concert. Families will see Ray Cornils, the Parish Ringers, the Festival Brass, and also the St. Mary Schola bring traditional and beloved tunes to life; helping make your holiday memorable. Ray Cornils works with the pieces, throughout the concert, placing them thoughtfully and creating a line-up which depicts and elaborates the various traditions of the season.
Another very interesting and exciting development this year is that A Kotzschmar Christmas performances will be held in two different locations as the Kotzschmar Organ is being meticulously renovated and will return in September 2014. The event will take place in Portland and Lewiston, widening the audiences and giving more people a chance to join in the holiday cheer and indulge in some beautiful renditions of classics.
This live holiday concert will kick off with a Cornils organ solo, titled 'Grand Fantasy on Joy to the World.' This is by Mark Cheban and it will be followed by Louis Claude D'aquin's 'Noel #10' for brass and organ. The St. Mary Schola will be presenting a capella choral works by Scheidt, Dethier, de Lassus and also Gabrieli, under Bruce Fithian's direction. St. Mary Schola are a group of some of the finest singers and instrumentalists that are currently present in northern New England. The ensemble has gained quite a following and is highly reputed for the elegance, finesse and excellence in their chamber music, especially when it comes to a cappella.
There is also a section titled 'Come Let's Be Merry', and this will be featuring the Parish Ringers. The section is sure to blow the audience away with amazing and tasteful arrangements of "Jolly Old St. Nicholas", "God Rest Ye Merry" and also "Gentlemen." No holiday concert is complete with "Jingle Bells", which is sure to click well with the younger audience. "March" from The Nutcracker, will also be presented in this section.
