Roald Dahl is one of the most renowned and successful children's writer. His inspiration for the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory came from his childhood. As a child he used to taste the new inventions by a chocolate manufacturer. Tim McDonald and Leslie Bricusse worked as a team and got the approval from the Dahl estate to make the play. Presented by Christian Youth Theater Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka is a musical play. It was originated from the artistic blend of elements from Roald's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the movie 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory' released in 1971. The play came up with numerous versions such as the junior version, the kids' version and then another version called the Theatre for Young Audiences. All these versions are owned by the Music Theatre International. It is the same company that holds the license of Willy Wonka as well.
Steven Oxman refers to the above mentioned version of the show as 'decent entertainment'. Anthony Newley and Bricusse contributed classy music to the show. The popular soundtracks include "The Candy Man" and "Pure Imagination" along with retro-sounding songs adapted for the stage. Oxman also states that it is the 'tone' of the show that makes the connection of the musical to the 1971 movie. He further says that the emergence of Oompa Loompa puppets create a visually captivating ambiance.
