The Ballet Across America initially debuted on Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra stage in 2008. The event staged a plethora of classical productions by widely acclaimed ballet companies. The shows were witnessed by thousands of people from around the world. The Ballet Across America series was a hit among the audience as well as critics, who praised the riveting performances and direction of all the productions. In 2010, the Ballet Across America series returned to the Kennedy Center stage with even bigger shows and ballet companies on board. Again the series presented world class theatre and dance performances that saw record setting attendance. Pieces like Jorma Elo’s ‘Red Sweet’ by Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, ‘In Dreams’ by Ballet Memphis and Jean Pierre Bonnefoux’s ‘Shindig’ by the North Carolina Dance Theatre were the highlights of the Ballet Across America II. The highly innovative and creative productions were well received by the audience.
This season, the multi-day ballet festival returns to the Kennedy Center. The Ballet Across America III will see performances by over nine ballet companies that will leave the audiences spellbound. The program will begin with Richmond Ballet’s unwrapping of its masterpiece, ‘Ershter Vals’. With Artistic Director Stoner Winslett leading the Richmond Ballet, the show will feature captivating music inspired by poems based on World War II’s Jewish ghettos. On the other hand, Oregon Ballet Theatre will be staging the highly acclaimed production of ‘Almost Mozart’ that will feature a spectacular music experience based on Mozart’s work. Balanchine’s ‘The Four Temperaments’ will also be staged at the event by Roy Kaiser led Pennsylvania Ballet.
The North Carolina Dance Theatre will also return to the Kennedy Center’s Ballet Across America this season with its production of ‘Rhapsodic Dances’. Established in 1970, the North Carolina Dance Theater company has staged hundreds of performances over the years that have won numerous awards and accolades. The company’s vast repertoire includes classic ballet shows such as ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Swan Lake’, ‘Nutcracker’, ‘Rubies’, ‘Apollo’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Agon’. With ‘Rhapsodic Dances’, the ballet company will highlight the legendary composer Rachmaninoff’s music, wrapped around a poetic and romantic contemporary tale. The show will be presented by the Artistic Director Jean Pierre Bonnefoux.
Other ballet classics expected to be staged at the Kennedy Center include Ballet Austin’s ‘Hush’, Washington Ballet’s ‘Wunderland’, Sarasota Ballet’s ‘Les Patineurs’ and Boston Ballet’s ‘Symphony in Three Movements’. The program will end with a grand staging of neoclassical and post modern show ‘Return’ by the Dance Theatre of Harlem under the Artistic Director Virginia Johnson. All the shows will be staged over a period of six days. The visitors will be able to interact with the artists, performers, industry veterans and dancers throughout the event.
