CMT music awards are one its kind music award show held since 2002.The CMT music awards each year celebrate the country music talent by awarding the best work of that year. These awards are considered unique for it's the only country music awards show where winners are decided through voting. The awards ceremony takes place in the city of Nashville the capital of Tennessee, United States.

In the beginning the awards were named as the CMT Flameworthy Video Music Awards by the vice-president of program development at that time Kaye Zusmann. The format of the show was inspired by the pattern of MTV Music Video Awards. The Inclusion of Bluegrass artists distinguished these awards from others including CMA and ACM. The popular bluegrass singer Alison Krauss has won twice in CMT awards.

The CMT Music Awards is the presentation of Country Music Television. The CMT network as the name suggests is an American music channel devoted to country music. This cable television network is owned and operated by MTV Network. The channel started on March 6, 1983 by Glenn D. Daniels and was called CMTV, Later the 'V' was removed for its likeness with MTV. The first ever on air video clip of CMT was "It's Four in the Morning" by the country music star of all times Faron Young.

The CMT Music Awards are running since 2002 and each year it's getting bigger and better. The awards have ever since evolved for the better; in 2004 to appreciate the innovation and creativity in music Johnny Cash Visionary Award was introduced. Reba McEntire was the first artist ever to get this award. In 2007 Jack Ingram's Love You was first one to be awarded Wide Open Country Video Award.

The nominees are usually chosen by a blue ribbon panel including notable journalist, music bigwig and CMT executives. The second round of selection was done by the votes of the viewers. The fans posted their votes online on the CMT website and chose their winners. Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban are few of the major award winners over the years. Kenny Chesney has successively won the best male award video of the year for four years in a row.

The first CMT Flameworthy Awards were held in June12, 2002 at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville. This fan voted awards show then nominated numerous country artists in as much as 12 various award categories .This Awards ceremony was hosted by the Sister's Act American actress Kathy Najimy. In 2005 the awards were turned into CMT Music Awards from CMT Flameworthy Awards but the format of the show remained the same.

The venue of the awards had been Curb Event Center at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee since 2006. The show in 2009 returned to its original venue Gaylord Entertainment Center which is now known as Sommet Center. The show over the years has been hosted by various famous celebrities including Jeff Foxworthy, Dolly Parton, Toby Keith Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus Pamela Anderson and finally by Bill Engvall.
