Billy Crystal went to the New York University where he earned a degree in BFA from the Tisch School of Arts in 1970. His father was the owner of a Commodore Music Store and died when Billy was only 15 years old. Since his father was a busy man, the only time he could spend with his family was on Sundays. This is why Billy named his Broadway 700 Sundays which, according to his estimate were the amount of Sundays he had spent with his beloved father.
His groundbreaking Broadway "700 Sundays" is known as one of his best works. It is a two act autobiographical play about his life and his journey from youth to adulthood. Billy, through his phenomenal acting and life experiences reflects on the importance of family and values that shaped him. The excellent performance of Billy in the show earned him the title of "The king of Broadway" by the New York post on its debut. He was given a Tony Award for 'Special Theatrical Experience' in 2005 for the show as well as two Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desks Awards for 'Outstanding Solo Performance'.
His earliest works include a role as Jodie Dallas on 'Soap' which was an American television Series. He hosted "Saturday Night Live" and later joined the cast. He started his own show by the name of "The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" which ended after just a few episodes. He became increasingly popular for his parody of 'Fernando Lamas' who was the host of a talk show and whose catch phrase 'you look.mahvelous' was a media sensation! Inspired by this catch phrase, Billy released an album by the name of "Mahvelous" and the single 'You Look Mahvelous' gained immense popularity in the US and Canada.
Perhaps, one of his best performances was in the classic romantic comedy movie, "When Harry met Sally". His acting in the movie was so brilliant that he was nominated for a Golden Globe award. Later, he was again nominated for the same award for his role in the comedy, "City Stickers" in 1991. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his movie "61" produced by him in 2001. Billy Crystal is also largely known by people for his excellent hosting skills at the Grammy Awards. He hosted the Academy Awards more than five times and also hosted an Oscar ceremony in 2012. In all these ceremonies, he enthralled the audience with his excellent sense of humor.
Not only is Billy's comedic talent commendable, so is his ability to write. After the success of the Broadway "700 Sundays" he wrote a book about it. The 192 pages long book was published by the Grand Central Publishing in 2006 and just like the show, gained a lot of fame. His talent on paper was evident through the eloquence with which he wrote. The book just like the show sheds light on his feelings after the death of his father and the changes in his life that follow the event. He does such a wonderful job at putting his emotions into words that the reader can almost hear him narrate the story with his Long Island accent. He surely leaves the reader wanting more.
