The foundation of Atlanta Ballet was the materialized form of Miss Dorothy Alexanders vision of bringing quality ballet to the people of Atlantic region.
Hence the Atlanta Ballet was founded well over seven decades ago by Dorothy Alexander. The initial step towards her dream was in form of a Dorothy Alexander Dance Group that she founded.
After gaining enough nation wide fame the group gained the professional status in 1967, which was followed by the renaming the group, Atlanta Ballet. Originating several decades ago, Atlanta Ballet is undoubtedly Americas oldest professional dance company.
Through all these years company has became one of the many specialties of Atlanta, Georgia and is considered to be playing a vital role in the citys cultural growth, apart from being an ambassador for the city while performing in other regions.
Atlanta Ballet has not only earned its recognition nationwide but it is well known globally. Atlanta Ballet also performed during the Olympic Arts Festival/Cultural Olympiad in 1996.
The company made its debut in London in 1999 as the group performed at the Millennium Celebrations of Royal Festival Hall on John McFalls Peter Pan.
Apart from entertaining thousands with their performances, company is also committed to educate and encourage new talent for which the company operates The Center for Dance Education.
The school not only educates the enthusiast but also holds several outreach programs to look out for new talent, which makes Atlanta Ballet leader in Dance Education as well.
Through steps like that, Atlanta Ballet flaunts its commitment towards carrying Miss Dorothys vision even further by providing people with dance education and by winning hearts of thousands through its enchanting performances.
Americas first regional Ballet Company, Dorothy Alexander Concert Group opened its doors in 1929. After consistent support by the local citizens for well over 12 years, the name of the company was changed to Atlanta Civic Ballet in 1941, which reflected that the contribution of ballet was not only influencing Atlanta, but the whole south side.
At that time Dorothy Alexander was the director of the company herself. Atlanta Ballet made two USO Trips in 1953, performing at different venues in Korea, Okinawa, Bermuda, Azores, Japan and Iceland.
The following year company performed at the first Arts Festival in Piedmont Park, Atlanta. About two years later Americas first ever regional dance festival was held that was hosted by Atlanta Ballet.
1979 marked Atlanta Ballets 50th Anniversary, and at that time company incorporated 25 dancers. The following year one of the main dancers of the company, Gil Boggs, led the U.S delegation in an International Ballet Competition that was held in Varna, Bulgaria.
Dorothy Alexander received the Capezio Award in 1981, which is considered to be the highest achievement in dance. Later in 1983, Atlanta Ballet became the resident company of Brooklyn Center in New York City, after signing a five years contract.
National Association of Schools of Dance awarded a full accreditation status to the Center for Dance Education in 2003 making it the only accredited dance school in the state of Georgia.
