The Color Purple is a stage adaptation of the moving 1985 film by Steve Spielberg of the same name. The story is based on the classic Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker who writes in first person narrative --- Celie's life in Celie's words--- giving a vivid understanding of the lives of the deeply spiritual Southern black people in the American South during the 1920's through the 1940's before the Civil Rights movement. It is a community where Church Ladies (played by Kimberly Ann Harris, Virginia Ann Woodruff, and Maia Nkenge Wilson) remind audience members that "it takes a whole village to raise a child." But it furthers the tale by including African history (in letters from Nettie) and how the culture is changed from the long-lived native culture to the white man's future culture as well. An inspiring family saga spanning 40 years, the story focuses on the testing times that Celie went through and her development from a homely young girl to a confident woman later in life. Her emotions are buried with only peeps showing until she starts writing to her sister Nettie.
Nominated for eleven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, The Color Purple opened on December 1, 2006 at the Broadway Theatre where it continues its record breaking run. The stage adaptation is directed by Gary Griffin and choreographed by Donald Byrd. The show's music and lyrics are by Grammy Award winners Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. It is a blend of gospel, jazz, ragtime and the blues. The original creative team of Tony Award-winner John Lee Beatty (sets), Paul Tazewell (costumes), Tony Award-winner Brian MacDevitt (lighting), Jon Weston (sound), Jonathan Tunick (orchestrations) and Kevin Stites (Music Supervisor) was reunited for the current North American tour of The Color Purple. It is produced by Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, Roy Furman, Quincy Jones, Creative Battery, Anna Fantaci & Cheryl Lachowicz, Independent Presenters Network, Lowy Family Group, Stephanie McClelland, Gary Winnick, Jan Kallish, Nederlander Presentations, Inc., Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Andrew Asnes & Adam Zotovich and Todd Johnson, and is produced in special association with AEG Live. LaChanze has been replaced by Fantasia in the character of Celie. She also gave a performance for the song 'I'm here' from the movie The Color Purple in a cameo at the occasion of the sixty first Annual Tony Awards.
In the fall of 2004, the musical first made its world premiere at Atlanta's Alliance Theater. It was there that producer Todd Johnson (and his amazing cast) not only received a host of positive reviews, but also garnered a "Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Production." While previews of the Broadway show (which began November 1st) largely brought out critics who were predisposed to a cast still somewhat getting on their feet, Color Purple's opening night on December 1st (and later, subsequent performances) reveal a tightly woven, well-rehearsed, and solid cast whose poignant, unforgettable, characters are enriched by Walker's deeply personal narrative and universal story of hope and redemption.
The subject has been dealt with brutal honesty and all the actors have done a commendable job for bringing forward the emotions of all the characters. The story centers, primarily, on the life of Celie (a survivor of incest) and her journey to self-realization by resisting marginalization, objectification, and self-annihilation. No longer viewing herself as an "ugly" victim, who feared whether "Somebody Gonna Love You," Celie (as actor LaChanze expresses most profoundly in songs like "Miss Celie's Pants" and "I'm Here") eventually realizes that the true love she is seeking is deep inside herself. Finally she is empowered to love herself unconditionally, to embrace her beautiful smile, and to feel comfortable with her new-found spirituality and liberated sexuality.
The fact that Celie who, despite her hardship or economic situation, lives to tell her story --- in her own words --- is something very motivating especially for other survivors like Celia. During the era in which Celie lived (and also during the time that Walker published her third narrative), there were few resources available to Black women who were survivors of rape, childhood sexual abuse, or domestic violence. Oprah Winfrey, supervising producer and major promoter of The Color Purple who originated the role of "Sophia" in the landmark film, testifies to this fact on her top-rated television show.
That isn't to say there isn't plenty of humor, much of it in the Tony-nominated performance by Felicia Fields. There is great singing by Destiny Child's Michelle Williams and "American Idol" favorite LaToya London. There is terrific singing and acting by Rufus Bonds Jr., as the abusive husband, and the handsome Stu James as his son. "Push Da Button", "Somebody Gonna Love You", and "I'm Here", the latter sung by the remarkable Jeanette Bayardelle as Celie are some of the great songs. A must-see show!
