Ice Hockey is a native game of relatively colder areas of the world, including Canada, United States, Russia, Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Slovakia, Austria, Latvia and Switzerland. It is a fast paced game in which players have to skate on ice and try to put the 'puck' into opponents' goal using sticks. In the recent years with the advancement of technology, it has become possible to continue playing this game throughout the year, owing to the advent of indoor rinks. The game is extremely popular in Canada, and has the status of official National Winter Sports in this country. The highest level for the players in this game is National Hockey League (NHL) for men and Western Women Hockey League (WWHL) and Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) for women. United States and Canada remain champions in this game for most of the competitions held on international level, owing to immense popularity and training facilities these countries have for this game.
History of this game dates back to 1500's, as some paintings from that era clearly show people playing a game on ice involving puck and sticks while wearing skates. The name Hockey for this game originated probably by the end of 1700's, as literature shows the word Hockey used in England in the year 1799 for probably the first time. The game was usually restricted to outdoors and strictly in the snow covered areas of northern countries in those days, and the idea to play it indoors appears quite a recent one, for obvious technological reasons. It has been claimed by Sir John Franklin in 1825 that Hockey was a morning sport for winters. Austin Hockey Association claims that the word Puck has its origin from Irish Poc and Scottish Gaelic Puc meaning to poke or to deliver a blow.
In the modern days, Canadian city ofMontreal is the hub for development of this game. Ice hockey was played for the first time indoors on March 3, 1875 at Victoria Skating Rink at Montreal. By that time, the rules of the game were not well defined, which were formulated later and the first team to be formed based on those rules was McGill University Hockey Club in 1877, followed by Montreal Victorias in 1881. The game gained popularity soon and the first World Cup for the game named Carnival Cup was organized in 1883, which was won by Montreal Victorias. The game rules kept on being modified and clarified with the passage of time and professional hockey as we know it today has been like this from early 20th century. National Hockey Association was formed in 1910 at Montreal, whichwas later reorganized and renamed to National Hockey League in 1917 that still continues to be the highest level of professional ice hockey.
Being a fast paced game involving high risk of collision among players, the game has a very high risk of injuries. To prevent such unfortunate events, players wear protective gear that includes heavily padded clothes, helmet and guards. Goaltenders are specifically at higher risk so they wear special protective gear.
Number of players and some rules may vary according to the code of play being used, but generally involves 18 players and two goaltenders in a team, up to a maximum of 20 players per side. Generally, each game is played in three periods of twenty minutes each. Team that scores most goals wins.
In today's world when economic recession and inflation has hit the common man, it is getting increasingly difficult for people to find affordable sources of entertainment. Cheap Hockey Tickets appear as a blessing for sports lovers as they provide an opportunity to enjoy the game without paying hefty ticket prices and being at a place where you can just indulge in the game and forget your worries.
