Anthony Kim earned the first PGA Tour win of his career at the 2008 tournament while making the overall best score of 272. In 2009 the tournament got the name Quail Hollow Championship and was won by Sean O'Hair. The next year Rory McIlroy lifted the trophy, his first USPGA win. The event got the name Wells Fargo Championship in 2011. This year Lucas Glover went on to play and win through the playoffs. The 2012 championship was won by Rickie Fowler. It was the first win of his career that he bagged when he birdied the very first playoff hole.
One of the biggest upset in the history of this event happened in 2005. At the beginning of the final round, Sergio Garcia who was leading the tournament by six strokes lost in the playoffs. This was a record of the largest lead lost by a player on a PGA Tour.
