The Victoria Salmon Kings is a pro ice hockey team that is a part of the East Coast Hockey League. It was founded in 2004 and located in Victoria within the Canadian province of British Columbia. Its home arena is the Save On Foods Memorial Center and its official colors are gold, navy blue, white and silver. The team spent its first year as an independent team and became an affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks from the NHL in 2006. Though formed in 2004, the actual team was formed back in 1988 and known as the Erie Panthers and then as Baton Rouge Kingfish. It is a team to enjoy live through Victoria Salmon Kings tickets for some of the best minor league ice hockey games.
The Victoria Salmon Kings is a proud champion of a Division championship after spending hardly two years in the league. It is a member of the Western Conference's Mountain Division within ECHL and is closely associated with the Chilliwack Bruins, a Western Hockey League team also located at the Save On Foods Memorial Center. For many years, Victoria remained the biggest region in Canada without a hockey team. Although, it had a distinguished history in the world of hockey but it lost that position after Victoria Cougars of the Western Hockey League left in 1994. One of the problems identified was the small Victoria Memorial Arena, a fifty year old venue that was capable of seating only four thousand people and thus needed to be replaced to attract a hockey club. The construction of a new arena was approved by voters in Victoria in 2002 with the condition being that a team from the Western Hockey League would be secured.
The partners in the project were however unable to get a WHL club for the arena but ended up getting hold of the Victoria Salmon Kings which became the first ever Canadian team to enter into the predominantly US league, the ECHL. The team began its season with a fourteen game road trip and playing at the Bear Mountain Arena in Colwood since the new arena hadn't been finished yet. They played their first game against the Bakersfield Condors with Ryan Wade, formerly of the University of Alberta, scoring the first ever goal in the history of the team. It won its first game against the Fresno Falcons are a startling 5-0 with their then goaltender, David Brumby, turning away thirty seven amazing shots for the shutout.
During the NHL lockout, a number of NHL players came to play for the Victoria Salmon Kings. This included two New York Rangers players, Dan Blackburn and Dale Purinton as well as San Jose Sharks player, Mark Smith. Today, it is touted to be one of the best teams in the ECHL and definitely a team to be looked forward to in the upcoming season. Watch their games live by booking Victoria Salmon Kings tickets and see for yourself how well they can hold up against tough competitors.
