The Vanderbilt Commodores is an NCAA Division I FBS team, whose teams play in SEC except for the women's lacrosse team, which is a member of the Big East Conference. Their athletic director is David Williams II, with sixteen varsity teams playing baseball at Hawkins Field, basketball at Memorial Gymnasium and football at Vanderbilt Stadium. Mr C is the team's official mascot. Six of the college's teams are men's teams, whereas ten are women's team. These play a number of sports, ranging from baseball, basketball and football to lacrosse, soccer and track & field.
The Commodores are set to play against the Bulldogs, in the upcoming Vanderbilt-Mississippi State game. Their men's basketball team participated in the very first college basketball game in 1893, in which they defeated the Nashville YMCA. Overall, the team has won over fourteen hundred games and have appeared nine times in the national NCAA Tournament. Of these, one is an Elite Eight appearance and four are Sweet Sixteen appearances. They have also won one NIT Championship and emerged as runners-up, out of eleven appearances. The women's basketball team has the third most national NCAA Tournament appearances at twenty, with twelve of them Sweet Sixteen appearances.
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, who will face the Commodores at the Vanderbilt-Mississippi State game, are members of the Mississippi State University. The Bulldogs are an NCAA Division I FBS program, led by Scott Stricklin in his capacity as the athletic director. The football team plays at the Davis Wale Stadium, whereas the basketball team plays at the Humphrey Coliseum and the baseball team at the Dudy Noble Field. Bully is the program's official mascot. Overall, the Bulldogs have won seven SIAA Championships, three SC Championships and eighteen Southeastern Conference Championships.
