TD Ameritrade Park will host two wonderful outdoor hockey games as part of the Mutual of Omaha Battles on Ice event. The first game will see the Omaha Lancers take on Lincoln Stars whereas the other game will pit UNO Mavericks against North Dakota Fighting Sioux. So hockey fans this is your chance to grab tickets for these two amazing encounters and watch them up close and personal.
The Mutual of Omaha Battles on Ice is arranged by Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority, Omaha Sports Commission, Omaha Lancers, Mutual of Omaha and the Omaha Lancers. The first match will be played between the Lancers and the Stars. The former were formed in 1996. They flew out of the blocks and compiled an impressive record of 40-13-1. They didn’t let the level of performance drop there and went on to life the Clark Cup. That was the start of an era of domination that would go on to make them one of the major forces in the sport. The Stars went to the playoffs every season for the first decade apart from one. They have also won two Clark Cups as well.
On the other hand there are the Lancers, who were incepted in 1986. It took them a little while to get going but once they did, there was no stopping them. The Lancers have won the Anderson Cup five times. On top of that they have also managed to win the prestigious Clark Cup seven times which also happens to be an all time record. On top of that they have also managed to capture the National title twice to put themselves among the most successful teams in junior hockey.
The second match will see the Mavericks take on the Fighting Sioux. The Mavericks began to play hockey in 1995. Every game for their debut season was sold-out and came in second in attendances. They joined the CCHA at the start of 1999-2000 campaign. That was a fairytale season as the Mavericks pulled off one shock win after another to reach a stage where they were just a single game away from going to the NCAA Tournament final. That was the start of a journey that has taken them to two NCAA Tournament appearances since then to kick start their march to the top.
Facing Mavericks from the other side of the field will Fighting Sioux, one of the powerhouses of college level hockey. The team first began to play in the late 1920’s and has since gone on establish its reputation as one of the best. They have won the NCAA Tournament seven times, and have made it to the Frozen Four a staggering nineteen times. Their total NCAAA Tournament appearance count stands at twenty seven. On top of that the Fighting Sioux have managed to capture the Conference Tournament on eleven occasions and have been crowned regular season conference champions a whooping fifteen times.
These two games will make the Mutual of Omaha Battles an event worth remembering. The fact it will be held outdoors adds that little bit of extra spice to the proceedings for hockey fans to enjoy.
