The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletics Department is the proud owner of its men’s basketball team. Commonly known as the UM Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks, the team plays actively in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference MEAC. The team’s home arena is the Hytche Athletic Center; a stadium with a capacity of five thousand seats. The UM Eastern Shore Hawks have been hailed in the past as one of the greatest powerhouse of college football players. More importantly, its signature contribution to college football remains the black players, who took the team to the highest level of success.
The past thirty three years of the Hawks show a record of 270-664, with a Win-loss percentage of .289. The team has contented Regular Season Conference Champion once and became the Conference Tournament Champion the same year. The team has never made any NCAA Tournament or NCAA Final Four appearances. They have never won a ranking in Preseason or Final AP Poll. However the team’s brilliance of undefeated seasonal wins between 1947 and 1960 tell a tale of a team that had the potential be become the strongest in its league. The best season of the Fighting Hawks by far remains the 1973-74 when under Coach John Bates the team finished with a record of 27-2 and a .931 record percentage.
This season UM Eastern Shore Hawks are ready to strike back with a stronger game play, full form and overhauled roster. Head Coach Frankie Allen and the Hawks will play the UMES 2012-13 men's basketball season by competing in a set of twenty seven games alongside eight home games. This fall the tournament kicks off with some of the best teams like the Western Michigan, The Bulls and Loyola. Bulls have an upper hand accredited to their past best record. The Big East season 2011-12 witnessed the Bull’s team winning with a 12-6 record while the Hawks staggered here with a 7-23 record.
The team’s pre-seasonal preparation, practice and training is suggestive of a big time comeback. Not only will the Hawks be competing with the Bulls, Loyola and Western Michigan but also lay a five-game non-conference competition this season. The team will open up the season by competing against Maryland, Cincinnati and UConna, Ohio University and American University. Three of these teams are national champions and UMES Hawks has had close competition with them in the past. Their encounters will surely increase the sales of UM Eastern Shore Hawks tickets.
With UMES Hawks ranked standing at the bottom of the MEAC, this season UMES Hawks banks on two of its most brilliant players. Ishaq Pitt an MEAC all-rookie team member exhibited great statistics in a regular season. His score brought an add-on of 7.0 points per game and promises strength to the Hawks as well. Ron Spencer is equally productive earning multiple rebounds for his team at the MEAC tournament’s opening round. With Pitt and Spencer on the roster, the team is bound to rise.
