Established in 1910, University of Southern Mississippi is a renowned research public institution. Besides providing bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees, the university also has a sound athletic department. The athletes are popularly known as Southern Miss Golden Eagles and they have been representing the university in Division I. Competing under Conference USA, the Golden Eagles at present are being managed by the Athletics Director, Jeff Hammond and play fourteen varsity sports. Golden Eagles football team played its first season in 1912 and since 1932 M. M. Roberts Stadium has served as its home ground. The arena has seen many renovations and expansions and since the time of its inauguration in 1932, its capacity has increased from 4,000 to 36,000 today. In 2009 the stadium reported its record attendance which exceeded the overall capacity in a game between the Southern Miss Golden Eagles and the Alcorn State. The venue has frequently been updated with the state of the art features, allowing an incredible experience to not just the players but also the attendees. Eagles have played many outstanding games here and the stadium has staged incredible performances by the players such as Brett Favre – quarterback, Reggie Collier and Football Hall of Famer, Ray Guy, among many others. The football team has so far won two national titles, along with eight conference championships. Miss Golden Eagles have a fierce and storied rivalry with the Memphis Tigers, Tulane Green Wave and Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The players adorning the colors black and gold raid the field as the fight song “Southern Mississippi to the Top” plays in the background.
 
Golden Eagles men’s basketball team has yet to show any major achievements other than the two conference wins. Reed Green Coliseum serves as their home base and it has accommodated over 8,000 people. Southern Miss Golden Eagles baseball players have two conference titles to their name and several of its players have even gone pro. Some of these include, John Bale, Chad Bradford who is a former pitcher of Tampa Bay Rays, Brian Dozier – recently recruited by the Minnesota Twins and Pat Rapp, Anaheim Angeles former pitcher.  
 
Southern Miss Golden Eagles women’s teams have been putting up a great show as well. The basketball team has made it to eight NCCA tournaments, having produced two All-Americans.
