Smackdown
WWE Friday Night Smackdown is a professional wrestling television program for World Wrestling Entertainment. When Smackdown was launched in 1999, it was shown on Thursday nights, but is now being telecast on Friday nights commencing from September 9, 2005, it is the only television broadcast for the Smackdown brand.
The Smackdown brand is currently one of WWEs three brands, that is currently being aired in the United States on The CW, the other two being RAW and ECW.On April 29, 1999, Smackdown as it was originally titled, was telecast as a single television special on UPN. On August 26, 1999, in Kansas City, Smackdown officially debuted on UPN.
The new WWF show proved to be a hit, that WCW moved Thunder to Wednesdays hoping to hold on to its audience, instead of losing them. Smackdown was recorded on Tuesdays and telecast on Thursdays. Smackdown made good use of the colour blue.
WWF Smackdown Logo 1999-2001. The first Smackdown set was distinctive as it featured an oval-shaped TitanTron, which was referred to as the OvalTron, entrance and stage which made it stand apart from the Raw set and its rectangle TitanTrons.
An added benefit to the previous set was the convenience for the OvalTron to be shifted to the left or the right of the stage easily .In August 2001, Smackdown celebrated its second anniversary, and the show received a new logo and set.
From the shows early existence, WWF superstar The Rock constantly referred to Smackdown as his show, if fact the name was derived from one of his catchphrases, Laying the smackdown. The previous television set that was used by the last Smackdown was partly destroyed during a fight.
WWE went through a procedure they referred to as Brand Extension in 2002. WWE was divided into two wrestling promotions, with individual rosters, storylines and managers.
Raw and Smackdown would launch each division, giving its name to the division and competing against each other. The split was a result of WWF purchasing their two biggest competitors, WCW and ECW.
The brand extension was announced during a telecast of WWF on March 25th, 2002, and was made official the following day. Wrestlers would now exclusively wrestle for their own show only.
This excluded the WWE Undisputed Championship and WWE Womens Championship, at that time, as those WWE titles would be defended on both shows.
Brock Lesnar, WWE Undisputed Champion in August 2002, refused to defend the title on Raw, and in doing so, his title became exclusive to Smackdown. The following week on Raw, newly instated World Heavyweight Championship was awarded to Raws designated #1 contender, Triple H.
And due to the fact that since the WWE Undisputed Championship was now Smackdown solely, it was no longer seen as Undisputed. After this, the WWE Womens Championship soon became Raw exclusive as well.
And due to the outcome of the Brand Extension, a yearly draft lottery was introduced to exchange members of each roster and rejuvenate lineups.
On June 6, 2005, as part of the month-long Draft Lottery, John Cena WWE Champion switched brands from Smackdown to Raw on June 6, 2005. And Smackdown was left without a World Title. At about the same time Orlando Jordan, United States Champion was considered as the top champion on the show.
On June 23, 2005, a six-man elimination match between John Bradshaw Layfield, Booker T, Chris Benoit, The Undertaker, Christian, and Muhammad Hassan to crown the first Smackdown Champion.
JBL won the match on the 30 episode of Smackdown Later the General Manager, Theodore Long, announced that even though JBL won the match, Smackdown did not require a Championship anymore.
Batista, the World Heavyweight Champion, entered the ring as Smackdowns final draft lottery pick. JBL was the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.
