San Francisco Dons represent the University of San Francisco while being the members of West Coast Conference and competing in the NCAA Division I competitions. The history of Athletics at the University of San Francisco goes all the way back to 1855, Anthony Maraschi S.J held the ball games for the very first time for the recreation purposes of the students and later he also laid foundation to Athletics department of the university. However, officially, the University took part in the intercollegiate competitions for the very first time back in 1907. Back then the school was known as the Saint Ignatius College and started competing with other colleges for the sports of rugby, basketball and baseball. It was around that time when San Francisco Dons developed a bitter rivalry with Saint Mary’s College of California and the Santa Clara University.
Back in the day, the team was called the Grey Fog and their official colors were red and blue. It was in 1930 when the college started to be recognized as a college rather than a High School and from the college it turned into University of San Francisco in the same year. Almost three years ago in 1927, the college chose gold and green as its official colors and in 1932 Don was chosen as the team’s official mascot.
