Despite their regular season success, the Spurs were unsuccessful in winning any NBA championships. In the Western Conference playoffs, they lost to the Houston Rockets in 1981 and to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1982 and 1983.

The 1990s and a title
The Spurs were very optimistic in the early 1990s. Under Brown's tutelage, the team became a perennial playoff presence although they were never able to advance further than the second round of the NBA Playoffs.
