The Rugby League World Cup originated from France. It was the French who had always wanted a World Cup and they began to work on that as early as 1935. Paul Barriere took up the mantle in 1951 and all the hard work paid off when the idea was accepted in the year 1953. France was to host the inaugural edition of the World Cup and so the preparations went underway.
The World Cup made its debut in 1954 with Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand joining France to kick start proceedings. The tournament's format was based on every team going up against every other side in the tournament. Great Britain met France in the final with the former beating the hosts to lift their first World Cup.
The second edition was held in the year 1957 which was won by Australia. It has since gone on to become one of the most watched rugby events in the world. The World Cup captured the imagination of the wider public in no time and played a big part in taking the sport to heights it currently enjoys.
The tournament underwent major restructuring in 1975 when it was decided that every "Rugby League International Federation" team taking place will play games based on home and away format. The team from GB was divided into separate teams representing England and Wales. In 1995 Scotland and Ireland also broke away from Great Britain ranks to form their own separate teams.
The Rugby League World Cup is normally held after a gap of four years. There have been prolonged gaps in between and in total thirteen editions have taken place till now. Of all the countries that have competed over the years, only three have managed to be crowned World Champions, which is an incredible stat.
Australia heads the list of teams with the most wins with nine triumphs against their name. Second on the list are Great Britain who have clinched the World Cup thrice. New Zealand have won it once. New Zealand, France and Australia are the one three countries who have featured in every single World Cup since its inception in 1954.
The Rugby League World Cup is an unbelievable tournament that pits the best teams from the Rugby League International Federation against each other in a series of brilliant games.
