The tournament was originally called the ‘Canadian Open’ or the ‘Canada Masters’ but history has seen its naming rights being sold to various companies over the years. Initially a lot of tobacco companies sponsored it but after laws were passed, the tobacco companies could no longer advertize and Rogers then sponsored the cup.
 
The tournament is played on hard court. The Masters 1000 is the men's event and is part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals). The women's cup is part of the Premier 5 Tournament on the WTA (Women's Tennis Association).
 
Throughout the months of July and August the Canadian people see live tennis action from the best in the game. The women's tournament and the men's tournament are both held in separate weeks. Alternatively, Montreal and Toronto get to host the cup. When the year is odd, the men's tournament is held in Montreal and women's in Toronto and when even it's the other way around.
Andy Murray is the Rogers Cup men's singles champion currently and the women's champion is Caroline Wozniacki.
 
The Rexall Centre at the York University is the venue for the Toronto tournament and the Stade Uniprix is the venue in Montreal. A new rule has been passed and from now on, that is from the year 2011, both the men's Rogers Cup Tournament and the Women's Rogers Cup Tournament will take place simultaneously but the tradition of having one in each city will continue like before.
